Department of Classics

ABOUT the Department of CLAVIS:

MISSION and PURPOSES

Department of Classical, Byzantine and Medieval studies (originally abbreviated to КлаВіС {‘ k l ∧ v i s }, English transliterated CLAVIS ) was established in 2007 on the basis of Department of Classics, which had been one of the key Departments of Ukrainian Catholic University since its foundation. Department of CLAVIS assumes functions of interfaculty educational and scientific research institution. As its educational goal CLAVIS pursues the facility of accessing Christian heritage of Ancient, Western Medieval and Eastern Byzantine worlds for both Humanities and Theology&Philosophy faculties’ students.

At present CLAVIS offers series of lectures on Latin, Ancient Greek and Church Slavonic languages; courses on Latin, Greek and Cyrillic Paleography; on Codicology and Textual criticism, proposes as well wide spectrum of particular lectures on Political and Social history, Religion and Philosophic Thought, Culture (Literature, Art, Music, Law) of Ancient, Latin Medieval, Byzantine and Rus’-Ukrainian periods up to XIV century.

The main forms of studying are workshops and practical trainings on reading and scientific analysis of original Latin, Greek and Ancient Ukrainian sources. The principal emphasis of the subject-matters of particular lectures is being placed on ascertaining of presence of intercultural relationships and mutual influences amongst Latin, Greek-Byzantine and Slavonic cultural spaces.

One of the scientific research priorities of CLAVIS is Study on Ancient heritage during Medieval period. Within the framework of Master Degree programme led by Faculty of Humanities the Department of CLAVIS offers interdisciplinary program with specialization termed “Medievalism”.
