The episcopal ordination of Father Borys Gudziak, headed by His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), was held on August 26 inSt. George’s Cathedral in Lviv.
Bishop-elect Borys Gudziak made a confession of faith, stating the truth of the teachings of the Church.
On July 21, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI blessed the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC and appointed Fr. Borys Gudziak titular bishop of Carcabia. He was appointed Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainian Catholics in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
The head of the UGCC gave the newly elected bishop a miter and episcopal baton. Welcoming the participants, Patriarch Sviatoslav said: “The ordination of Fr. Borys is happening at an interesting time – when we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the return toSt. George’sCathedral the mortal remains of the servant of God Patriarch Josyf Slipyj. Josyf Slipyj is for us today an example of a real bishop, the one among his people of God who reveals to us the one good Teacher.”
According to His Beatitude Sviatoslav, in his time Josyf Slipyj was able to move a young Borys, who gradually fulfilled his dreams by creating theTheologicalAcademy, and then UCU. This, according to His Beatitude, Bishop Borys, was an attempt to give everything to the poor and to follow the sole good of the teacher, who is Jesus Christ. “Let Patriarch Josyf be for you a model of your episcopal ministry and a model of theChurchofChristand Christian Spirit,” said the hierarch. “In this consecration God hitherto summarizes your life and wants to make you a leader in the eternal life of all those who follow you, and there will be millions.”
Patriarch Sviatoslav thanked Bishop Borys for his tireless, troublesome work inUkraine: “UCU will always be associated with Your Person. Today, as we are letting You go toFrance, we know that You are going there but that You will not forsake us, will not forsake the Church inUkraineand ourCatholicUniversity.”
Newly ordained Bishop Borys (Gudziak) thanked all those present and those who contributed to the formation of his vocation: “Today I received vestments – signs of the high ecclesiastical responsibility of the ministry, but it is important to remember that the Lord gives us one example – to come down. God who created the cosmos, comes closer to all of us, is nearby, is part of our life, our death and loves each of us. Remember that however high our ideas, they are always embraced by the good and incredible Lord, Creator of all things and our close Friend. I’m grateful for your love and thank God, who gives this love to everyone so that we share it,” said Bishop Borys in his sermon.
Participation in the consecration and solemn liturgy included the Papal Nuncio in Ukraine, Thomas Edward Gullickson; Metropolitan of Lviv Archbishop Ihor (Voznyak), Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainian Catholics in Great Britain and Apostolic Visitor for the Ukrainian Catholics in Ireland Bishop Hlib (Lonchyna); bishops of the UGCC from Ukraine and abroad, bishops of the Roman Catholic Church; diplomats and ambassadors; representatives of donors and UCU foundations,;UCU lecturers and students, and representatives of different Christian denominations, including the Metropolitan of Lviv UOC-KP Dymitriy (Rudiuk).
