The annual Carpathian English Summer School (ESS) is an intensive English immersion course held in a picturesque site in the Carpathian Mountains which provides opportunities for spiritual growth, serious work and fun. The ESS is an important project jointly sponsored by the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) and the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation. Its primary objectives are to enable students to immerse themselves in an English speaking community in order to become fluent English speakers and to create a prayerful, retreat-like environment in keeping with Eastern Christian traditions.

English Summer School 2010
5 – 26 July 2010
The Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine is seeking volunteers for its Carpathian English Summer School 2010. The month-long program offers a chance to live with Ukrainian college students, experience Eastern Christianity, and learn about the new challenges facing this ancient country. No knowledge of Ukrainian is necessary.
Contemporary Ukraine is increasingly opening up to the English-speaking world. There is an ever-growing demand for a high level of English language competency from the students if they are going to communicate effectively. One possible but expensive solution is to send students to English-speaking countries. A more economical solution, already tried and tested by UCU, is to create an English-speaking environment in Ukraine.
English is a valuable resource for students. Each semester we have numerous English-speaking teachers and lecturers at the University. Likewise, the English Summer School provides a tremendous opportunity for our students to meet people from foreign countries and to gain a rich cultural experience.
The Ukrainian Catholic University is currently in its fifteenth year of academic operations. We have now graduated our eleventh class of students. We hope these students have gained the wisdom they need to be leaders in the third Christian millennium.
APPLICATION: The deadline for applying to the program is March 30, 2010. You can download and complete the application file available at right and send it as an attachment by e-mail. For questions about volunteering, contact the Volunteer Adviser at: essvolunteer@ucu.edu.ua.

Students’ impressions of the ESS
Anna Maksymovych and Marianna Kaspryshyn:
“These were the best days in this summer for us. ESS is a good chance to improve your English. These are 21 days of interesting classes, funny games and competitions. In ESS you can find a lot of good friends and interesting people. These are active evenings in the surrounding of good people.”
Adriana Havryshkevych:
“ESS is the most beautiful place for studying and relaxation. I found a lot of friends there and I felt that improved my English. I had very nice, merry, witty teachers. Every day in the morning I studied, but in the evening I went for a walk to the mountains. There was wonderful landscape.
I am very glad that I had the opportunity to be in this camp. It’s also great that now I have a lot of American friends.”
Kmyta Olha:
“In summer the students of Ukrainian Catholic University had possibility to improve their knowledge of English in the English Summer School. …A lot of students could communicate with our teachers (who were from other foreign countries) on different topics. The most successful, in my opinion, was the program of lessons, because we could speak about culture and not ordinary views on the history of the world. It was very interesting and useful for young people, because now many of us have friends from England, USA, Canada.
I think that ESS is a possibility for students to show their abilities and skills.
We spent our free time in interesting ways. We developed our acting talents. We sang songs, played very amusing games and watched funny cartoons and films.
Thank you very much.” |
