This paper explores late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century travelogues authored by British women travellers that came after their travels in Ukraine and Crimea with special focus on Mary Holderness’s account of her three-year residence in a Crimean village. The paper aims to show how these publications contributed to the contemporary knowledge collection on Ukraine and Crimea and added to their mapping in the period. The paper closely analyses the travellers’ recordings of encounters with local people, experiences both on the road and during the sojourn and demonstrates the complexity of women’s travel narratives regarding the binaries of self and other.
