At the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  May 30, 2014

 The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, in cooperation with the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (IFNUL), is pleased to announce the 15th American Studies Summer Institute focusing on the history of civil rights movements in the U.S. and how it has impacted the institutionalization of human rights protections in U.S. Government.  This event will take place at Franko National University in Lviv from June 16 –20, 2014.  Thirty university lecturers, researchers, lawyers and journalists from throughout Ukraine are invited to apply.  Participants will be selected on a competitive basis.

 The Summer Institute in American Studies is an intensive summer program of lectures, seminars, discussions, and simulations that provide participants an opportunity to spend several days deeply immersed in American Studies.  Each year the Institute has a different focus.  For 2014, the Institute will study the history of the U.S. Civil Rights movement, identifying key moments that are instructive in understanding how the government has evolved legally and institutionally to increase tolerance and protect and human rights in a diverse society.

 American experts will conduct the lectures and discussions, approaching the topic from a legal and historical point of view.  The working language of the summer institute is English. Ukrainian academics, lawyers and journalists with interest in American Studies and civil rights are encouraged to apply.

 Eligibility:

  • Junior lecturers at Ukrainian institutions of higher learning who are either already teaching or currently developing American Studies courses in their home institutions;
  • Young researchers, lawyers, or journalists with experience or a strong, demonstrated interest in human rights issues;
  • English language fluency.

 Preference will be given to those candidates, who have not attended recent American Studies Summer Institutes organized by the Public Affairs Section in Ukraine.  Individuals who have participated in earlier annual American Studies Institutes can apply if they explain what impact their previous participation had on further development of U.S. Studies at their institution.

 Application:  When working on the application, please include a thoughtful, well-organized, and detailed statement of purpose.  You will also need to include a letter of recommendation from your university administration or relevant supervisor indicating support for your participation. The Embassy will cover the cost of tuition, lodging and meals in Lviv for all participants.  Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the summer institute venue and must pay a registration fee of 50 Hryvnias upon arrival at the summer institute site in Lviv.

 Deadline: for receipt of applications in U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section is May 30, 2014.

Application forms are available at U.S. Embassy’s web site http://ukraine.usembassy.gov or by contacting the program coordinator at [email protected] , tel. (044) 521-5763.
