MA Program in Global History

Starting in the academic year 2012/2013, the Free University of Berlin
and the Humboldt University Berlin are introducing a two-year Master
of Global History as a joint English-language program. The Master of
Global History offers a program in which students learn to reconstruct
the history of global entanglements and global processes, mainly in
the modern world but with reference to their genesis in earlier eras.
The key feature of the program is that it is based on close
cooperation between History and the area studies. The idea is not to
simply convey a macro-perspective on global change. Rather, students
are encouraged to acquire in-depth knowledge about the culture and
society of a single region, and will learn to situate that region’s
history – through comparisons, and through a focus on interactions and
exchange – in the context of global structures and transformations.
The program is based on courses that specifically address issues of
global history; courses that focus on the history of a specific region
– Africa, East-Asia, Europe, the Islamic world, Latin America,
North-America or South- and Southeast-Asia – and situate it in larger
global contexts; and courses that students take outside of their focus
area. Students enrolled in the MA Global History will be able to
choose from a broad range of courses in the History and area studies
departments of both universities.
Students holding a bachelor’s degree in History or in area studies can
apply for the master’s program. Applications for the master’s program
that starts in October 2012 can be submitted beginning around the 1st
of July to the 15th of August 2012 (please consult the indicated
webpage for updates).
