Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! Greetings from Ukrainian Kyiv!

Today is Sunday, 27 February 2022. We survived yet another horrible night. But after night, there comes day, there is morning. After darkness, there comes light, just as after death there comes resurrection, which we all today radiantly celebrate. On this Sunday we will celebrate the presence among us, the presence here in Ukraine, of the Risen Christ.

But on this Sunday, the residents of Kyiv will not be able to go to church because of the government mandated curfew and everyone should stay at home because of the threat to their lives. But in that case, the Church will come to the people. Our priests will descend to the underground, they will descend to the bomb shelters, and there they will celebrate the Divine Liturgy. The Church is with its people! The Church of Christ brings the Eucharistic Saviour to those who are experiencing critical moments in their life, who need the strength and hope of the resurrection.

Today I would like to ask all those who have the opportunity to go to church: go to the Divine Liturgy! Today, go to Confession. Everyone receive Communion. Today, receive the Eucharistic Christ, to sacrifice for those who cannot go to church, to sacrifice Holy Communion for our soldiers. Today our life is in their hands. To sacrifice for those who are wounded, for those who are discouraged, for the refugees who are on the roads during this crooked war in Ukraine. Today I would like to thank those who are defending Ukraine in various ways.

We see that the government services, especially in Kyiv, are working at the highest level. We once doubted, wondering if our government institutions were strong. We saw that our government has passed its tested for strength, and is continuing to pass. Along with out army, I would like to thank our State Emergency Service of Ukraine, who today are pulling people out of obstructions; our medics, who in this night saved hundreds of lives; our firefighters, who put out hundreds of fires throughout Ukraine. I would like to thank everyone who is working, each one in their own way, for victory in Ukraine. I would like to address our people abroad, our brothers and sisters in various parts of the world: I thank you for your compassion with us. I thank our bishops in Australia, Argentina, Brasil, North America, Western Europe, who organized great national solidarity in those countries where you reside with our Ukrainian people. I thank all those who are striving to tell the world the truth about Ukraine, who are gathering humanitarian aid, medicine, or are simply praying for the victory of Ukraine.

We believe that, just as morning comes after night, just as after death comes resurrection, after this horrible war there will be victory for Ukraine, which this new day relentlessly and steadily brings closer. Allow me to impart to all of you, from here, from the hills of Kyiv, from the first-throned city of Kyiv, to impart to you this resurrectional and joyous blessing of God: May the blessing of the Lord be upon you, through His grace and love for humankind, always now and ever and for ages of ages.

Cari fratelli e sorelle in Cristo, vi saluto dalla Kyiv ucraina.

Oggi è domenica, 27 febbraio 2022. Abbiamo superato un’altra terribile notte. Ma dopo la notte viene il giorno, viene la mattina, dopo il buio arriva la luce. Allo stesso modo, dopo la morte arriva la resurrezione che noi tutti oggi festeggiamo con gioia.

Questa domenica festeggeremo Cristo risorto presente tra noi, presente in Ucraina. Però questa domenica gli abitanti di Kyiv non potranno venire in chiesa perché è stato indetto il coprifuoco, e tutte le persone devono rimanere a casa per non rischiare la vita. Sarà la Chiesa dunque a venire da loro. I nostri sacerdoti scenderanno nelle cantine, scenderanno nei rifugi antiaerei, e lì celebreranno le Divine Liturgie.

La Chiesa è con il suo popolo. La Chiesa di Cristo porta con se il Salvatore eucaristico a quelli che vivono momenti critici della loro vita, che hanno bisogno di forza e di speranza nella Resurrezione. Oggi vorrei chiedere a tutti quanti hanno la possibilità di venire in chiesa: andate e partecipate alla Divina Liturgia. Confessatevi oggi e comunicatevi tutti. Ricevete Cristo eucaristico e offritelo per quelli che questa domenica non possono partecipare alla Liturgia. Offrite la Santa Comunione per i nostri militari. La nostra vita oggi è nelle loro mani. Offritela oggi per quelli che sono feriti, emarginati, per quelli che sono diventati dei rifugiati da questa guerra sanguinosa in Ucraina.

Oggi desidero ringraziare di cuore tutti quelli che difendono l’Ucraina in tutti i modi possibili. Stiamo osservando come tutti i servizi pubblici, in particolare, a Kyiv, svolgono egregiamente il loro lavoro. Prima ci chiedevano se le nostre istituzioni pubbliche fossero affidabili. Oggi vediamo che la prova di robustezza del nostro Stato è stata superata e continua a dare esiti positivi. Oltre ai nostri soldati, desidero ringraziare, inoltre, gli operatori del Servizio nazionale per le emergenze dell’Ucraina che oggi liberano i feriti dalle macerie; i nostri medici che lungo questa notte hanno salvato centinaia di vittime; i nostri vigili del fuoco che hanno fatto spegnere centinaia di incendi in tutta l’Ucraina. Desidero ringraziare tutti quelli che oggi, ognuno a modo suo, si adoperano per la vittoria dell’Ucraina.

Oggi mi rivolgo al nostro popolo negli insediamenti, ai nostri fratelli e sorelle in diverse parti del mondo. Vi ringrazio perché condividete questo tempo con noi. Ringrazio i nostri vescovi in Australia, Argentina, Brasile, America del Nord, Europa Occidentale che hanno promosso una grande solidarietà dei paesi, in cui vivono, con il nostro popolo ucraino. Ringrazio tutti quelli che oggi cercano di raccontare onestamente al mondo la verità sull’Ucraina, che raccolgono aiuti umanitari, fanno raccolta di medicinali, o semplicemente pregano per la vittoria dell’Ucraina. Crediamo che, come dopo la notte viene il giorno, dopo la morte arriva la resurrezione, anche dopo questa terribile guerra ci sarà la vittoria dell’Ucraina. E questo nuovo giorno avvicina questa vittoria a noi tutti nel modo inesorabile e costante. Permettetemi da qui, dai santi colli di Kyiv, dalla nostra capitale, di impartirvi questa gioiosa benedizione divina domenicale.
