In this talk I will attempt to offer a critical reflection on the present state of historical research dealing with the Ukrainian past and marry it with a dissenting perspective on what historians of Ukraine might offer their colleagues in other fields. 

I will cap my remarks by sketching an avenue which I find especially appealing: one that questions the inexorability of collective identities and focuses on the individual agency and its role in the construction of contingent subjectivities.
