The territories of today’s Ukraine have produced literature written in multiple languages by authors of diverse cultural backgrounds. World famous authors such as Joseph Roth, Bruno Schulz, Mikhail Bulgakov, Isaak Babel, Shmuel Yosef Agnon and many others were born, lived and wrote in Ukraine. However, the readers of these authors around the world are rarely aware of their connections with Ukraine, while in Ukraine itself their work is often considered to be part of a foreign literary tradition and so not the concern of Ukrainians. Recent times have seen a change, with literary scholars and intellectuals in Ukraine turning their attention to the country’s rich literary heritage, but it remains a challenge. How can literary scholars and teachers conceptualise and integrate this literary diversity into a coherent story? Should they try to do so? What is the meaning of this diverse cultural heritage for contemporary Ukraine and its relations with the outside world? How can Ukraine embrace this heritage while its own literature remains poorly known abroad and sometimes even marginalised at home? How can Ukraine reverse centuries of cultural repression while also maintaining openness to the cultural other? These and other questions related to Ukraine’s diverse literary heritage will be the focus of our discussions.
